Art director Cynthia Hoffman asks: "Why don't we do a comic with 'the tax fairy'?" Dorothy sketches this out, and we're off.

We start with a way-too-long script.

Well it's organized a bit better, but still far too long.

Dorothy and Cindy block out some panels...

The script isn't solid yet, but Dorothy ain't waiting. She gets her ideas on paper. And they're all God Damn Fantastic.

Well, should look pretty much like this.

Inking begins; it's not necessary to draw all the panels contiguously, since they're all going to be composited in Photoshop anyway.

And we're inking....

Gather round frail computer folk and hear the tale of how Businessweek pressganged the inimitable Dorothy Gambrell into making a two-page spread comic about taxes. It turned out uh-mazing thanks to her, and we promised it wouldn’t happen again soon. It’s a real pain to do these. But oh man it looks SO DAMN GOOD

The sex. The money. The booze. The journalism. For the #LastPrintIssue of Newsweek, I spent weeks interviewing dozens of Newsweek vets for a huge oral history of the making of the magazine. Here’s one of the stories I dug up:

Kubic: Arnaud de Borchgrave was famous for this kind of thing, too. His expense accounts were legendary. The amount of his luggage that airlines “lost.” With $40 shirts and $100 shoes and what have you. In the 1960s!

Doyle: I was once at a dinner party with Arnaud, and I watched him in his double-breasted bespoke suit peel a grape without touching it. Peel a grape using, like, I think a knife and a fork. Peeled the skin, put it in his mouth. I’ve never seen it before or since.

De Borchgrave: I lived extremely well. I traveled a lot. In those days we always traveled first-class. Was never questioned. We stayed in five-star hotels. Never questioned. If we had to stay in one place for several days or weeks, we could get a suite. Never questioned. I never had an expense account questioned in the whole 30 years I worked at Newsweek.

Kubic: I remember specifically. Arnaud was doing something during the Indo-Pakistan War, and he hired 110 guys to push his Jeep across some incredibly difficult road. And he said he paid each of them a dollar.

De Borchgrave: I was with Dean Brelis of NBC on the Indian border. When we got near Sikkim, there was a landslide, so we had to hire sherpas—300 of them—to get our vehicle across the landslide. They carried it. Locals, in the village. We gave them good money. Two or three dollars apiece. Put in this big expense account. Never questioned. What did I write on the expense account? “Sherpas for manhandling our Jeep across a landslide.”

One fascination in a presidential race mostly bereft of intrigue was the strange, incessant, and weirdly overfamiliar e-mails that emanated from the Obama campaign. Anyone who shared an address with the campaign soon started receiving messages from Barack Obama with subject lines such as “Join me for dinner?” “It’s officially over,” “It doesn’t have to be this way,” or just “Wow.” Jon Stewart mocked them on the Daily Show. The women’s website the Hairpin likened them to notes from a stalker.

But they worked. Most of the $690 million Obama raised online came from fundraising e-mails. During the campaign, Obama’s staff wouldn’t answer questions about them or the alchemy that made them so successful. Now, with the election over, they’re opening the black box.

The writer who gave the knowing, insiderly, vaguely literary and yet unassuming “voice” to Newsweek — and the magazine had a voice, you could hear it as you read it, and that was the point — was the masterly Peter Goldman. He wrote like a dream, digesting all of the reporting files sent to him; finding the juiciest and freshest morsels of news that had not made print elsewhere… Peter would pace the hallways in New York, grave and studious and lost in thought, when he was preparing to write a story. Ben Bradlee, who was a Newsweek D.C. bureau chief before going to The Washington Post, described Peter as a “one man funeral cortege.”

The magazine that has been home away from home for the last eight-and-a-half years is going out of print.
